4 Moves, Gee and Cuddy

Gee states, “various Discourses which constitute each of us as persons are changing and often are not fully consistent with each other; there is often conflict and tension between the values, beliefs, attitudes, interactional styles, uses of language, and ways of being in the world which two or more discourses represent”(7, Gee). I believe I can relate to this quote because other families have different relationships and different religions. Other household have different values, and someone that hasn’t adapted to that value, it may create conflict.

“This woman is simply using the wrong grammar(the wrong “dialect”) for this type of (middle-class) interview. It’s a perfectly good grammar (dialect), it just won’t get you this type of job in this type of society.”(6, Gee). I disagree with Gee on this because I believe if someone is qualified for a job they can get it. Just because of their grammar or the way they speak does not make them not qualified for a job. It is more the way they present themselves during the interview is what will make or break you.

“We close up. We wrap ourselves up. We make ourselves small. We don’t want to bump into the person next to us”(paragraph 9, Cuddy). I disagree with what she is saying during this, I believe there is a reason for a student or adult that they might be cowering down or closing up. I keep my arms crossed and I slouch all the time and I am not hiding anything from anyone. I am an open book, and I am not afraid to speak at all. I will raise my hand if I know the question.

She also talks about “faking it till you make it, fake it till you become it”, I agree with Cuddy in this statement. It makes sense that a person can fake it till they become it. There has been many times in my life where I have faked something to become the best at it. I always used to be afraid before going to one of my DJing gigs, but I put in my head that I am the best and I am going to make people dance and it works every time.
